A study on laterite stones as building material

In this study we have classi ed laterite stone based on its strength characteristics from 5 major quarries of the South Canara region in Karnataka, India. This study includes investigation of the laterite stone for construction purposes. The inherent properties of laterite such as texture, colour, structure and hardness were investigated.Properties of Laterite | Physical | Thermal,Physical Properties of Laterite. Physical properties of rocks are used to identify the type of rocks and to discover more about them. There are various physical properties of Laterite like Hardness, Grain Size, Fracture, Streak, Porosity, Luster, Strength etc which defines it.WHAT ARE THE ENGINEERING AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF,Engineering & Physical Properties of Stones The following are the engineering and physical properties of the stones that should be looked into before selecting them for engineering works: 1. Structure The structure of the stone may be stratified (layered) or unstratified. Structured stones should be easily dressed and suitable for super structure.

See our detailed article on the Mohs hardnessLaterite - Sedimentary Rocks,Laterite is a reddish weathering product of basalt. At least this is what it is in India where this rock or a soil type was first defined by a Scottish scientist Francis Buchanan-Hamilton in 1807. However, not all laterites are enriched in iron and sometimes they are not even reddish.Investigation of laterite stones for building purpose from,,Laterite is a heterogeneous, anisotropic rock consisting of hard ferruginous skeletal framework impregnated with soft clayey material. It contains lot of structural irregularities in the form of cavities and pores. • Malabar laterite from Kerala can be categorized as weak rock that can be used for low-rise buildings and partition walls.
